To assist the Registered nursing staff and other health care professionals across the Unit and support the day to day services in the outpatient, theatre and day care unit areas carrying out a wide range of duties under supervision during each shift.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

      Roles of NHS Health Care Assistant :

  • The Health Care Assistant will assist the registered nurse to deliver a high standard of holistic patient care ensuring that the patients’ dignity and equality is maintained at all times.
  • The Health Care Assistant will ensure that the principles set out in the Fundamentals of Care are incorporated into daily practice and applied to all patients.
  • Maintain accurate and legible patient records. Accurately documenting information relating to patient care as instructed by the registered nurse.
  • The Health Care Assistant will ensure positive communication with patients, relatives and carers whilst respecting issues relating to professional confidentiality.
  • Observe and report changes in patients’ condition or behaviour to the registered nurse.
  • The Health Care Assistant will provide psychological and physical support to patients prior to, during and following clinical procedures or investigations; this may be to assist them with seating, mobilising, awareness of their environment or directions to other areas of the department.
  • Act as chaperone for patients undergoing examinations or procedures and accompany patients to other departments taking appropriate documents and relaying appropriate messages under the direction of the registered nurse.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to emergency or unplanned situations.
  • Prepare ophthalmic environment and equipment for use within the clinical area regarding stock and cleanliness at the start of each session.
  • The Health Care Assistant will undertake the responsibility of management and disposal of linen stock and other general housekeeping needs.

Profile

  •  Good general education to NVQ Level 2 or equivalent Experience Basic IT skills.
  • Evidence of Health & Social care study or equivalent.
  • Previous care experience. Experience with working within a team in a care setting.
  • Previous hospital care experience. Experience in an ophthalmic care setting.
  • Able to demonstrate care and compassion. Recognises the importance of good communication.
  • Able to clearly document written information. Understanding of data protection and confidentiality. Be able to work within a team and conduct duties under minimum supervision. Commitment to continuous development.
